What is epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which a person experiences recurrent seizures caused by sudden electrical discharges in the brain. These seizures can range from brief periods of inactivity to severe muscle spasms and loss of consciousness. Epilepsy can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.

Symptoms of epilepsy

  • Unexpected seizures or convulsions
  • Brief loss of consciousness or attention
  • Muscle stiffness or uncontrolled movements
  • Changes in sensation, smell, taste, or emotions

How is epilepsy treated?

Although epilepsy cannot always be completely cured, there are effective treatments to control seizures:

  1. Medication: Antiepileptic drugs help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures.
  2. Lifestyle and prevention: Regular sleep, a healthy diet, and avoiding alcohol or stress can reduce attacks.
  3. Surgery or other medical procedures: In some cases, surgery or special therapy may be helpful if medication is not effective enough.
  4. Support and education: Understanding epilepsy and training family and friends to help during a seizure is crucial.
